Getting the grating size right
doesn't mean the specification is right
When choosing steel grating, one of the most common mistakes isconfirming only the length and width while ignoring actual load and support conditions.
Grating of the same size used in a pedestrian walkway, drainage ditch, industrial platform or vehicle area may face completely different loads, spans and safety requirements, so different bearing bar and grating configurations are needed.
The right way to choose is to start with"Where will this grating be used?", then confirm the suitable product specification step by step according to service load, support span, drainage, walking, environment and maintenance requirements.
To choose grating, first confirm three things: use, load and span.
These three pieces of information directly affect the subsequent choice of bearing bar specification, grating spacing and support method. Once the structural conditions are confirmed, deciding other fabrication and surface treatment based on drainage, slip resistance, corrosion protection, installation and maintenance needs is more appropriate than starting from size or price.
Choose grating in this order
7 Key Points for Choosing Grating
Grating specifications are interrelated, so we don't recommend comparing any single dimension in isolation. The following can serve as a decision sequence for preliminary planning.
Confirm the intended use first
Will the grating be used as a pedestrian walkway, drain cover, industrial platform, equipment platform or vehicle area? Different uses create different requirements for load, safety and grating configuration.
Use should therefore be the first condition confirmed when choosing a grating specification.
Confirm actual load requirements
People walking, equipment placement and vehicle traffic create different load conditions on grating.
For vehicle areas, we recommend providing the vehicle type, maximum gross weight and known wheel load conditions as a basis for subsequent specification evaluation.
Don't overlook the support span
Support span is an important condition in grating load planning. For grating of the same size, different actual support positions may require different bearing bar specifications.
For drain covers, we recommend providing the clear width of the ditch, frame dimensions and actual support positions.
Select the bearing bar specification
Steel grating is mainly made of bearing bars and cross bars, with the bearing bars being the key element affecting structural load capacity.
The height, thickness and orientation of bearing bars should be selected according to service load, support span and installation conditions, rather than judged by the finished length and width alone.
Grating spacing should suit the usage scenario
Grating spacing affects drainage, ventilation, light transmission and walking comfort, and also relates to whether small objects may easily fall through on site.
If the project already specifies grating spacing, we recommend clearly indicating whether the dimension refers tocenter-to-center or clear spacing to avoid differences in understanding the specification during fabrication.
Plain or serrated?
General grating can use plain bearing bars; if the service environment calls for more grip between shoe soles and the surface, serrated bearing bars can be evaluated as needed.
However, serrated grating does not mean on-site cleaning can be neglected. If oil, mud or other deposits build up on the surface, walking stability may still be affected, so day-to-day maintenance is required.
Choose according to the environment
Surface Corrosion Protection
After fabrication, carbon steel grating can undergo Hot-Dip Galvanizing according to the actual service environment and project requirements, forming a protective coating on the steel surface and improving corrosion resistance.
If the project already specifies a surface treatment method, galvanizing standard or other corrosion protection conditions, these should be confirmed before ordering and fabricating the grating.
For grating in different uses,
how do the selection points differ?
The following is not a fixed specification table, but the conditions that should be confirmed first when choosing grating for different usage scenarios. Actual product specifications must still be evaluated according to engineering drawings and load requirements.
Pedestrian Walkways
Prioritize confirming walking requirements, support span, grating spacing and surface type. If the environment is prone to moisture or other factors that may affect walking stability, serrated grating can be further evaluated, together with appropriate on-site cleaning and maintenance.
Drain Covers
Besides drainage needs, you also need to confirm the clear width of the ditch, frame dimensions, support span, bearing bar direction and whether pedestrians or vehicles will pass over it. If there is an existing frame, the usable depth and installation dimensions should also be confirmed.
Industrial Platforms
Platform support layout, equipment and personnel loads, pipeline positions, hole requirements and future maintenance methods must be confirmed. If equipment or pipelines pass through the grating, notches, holes and special shapes can be planned according to drawings.
Vehicle Areas
Vehicle grating can't simply be described as "load-bearing." We recommend providing the vehicle type, maximum gross weight, known wheel loads, traffic pattern, support span and installation conditions, and then evaluating the specification based on actual load conditions.
"Thicker is safer" is not a complete way to choose grating
Bearing bar size is indeed an important condition in structural planning, but the actual load capacity of grating also depends onsupport span, load direction, load type, material configuration and installation method.
We therefore don't recommend simply "choosing something thicker" in place of a complete specification check. If the project has clear load requirements, it should be evaluated according to actual conditions, drawings and any necessary design or testing requirements.
5 Common Mistakes When Choosing Grating
Providing only length × width
Without the support span and service load, it is difficult to determine a suitable bearing bar specification from external dimensions alone.
Wrong load direction
Grating bearing bars have a definite direction. If the installation direction doesn't match the support layout, the planned load conditions may be affected.
Spacing definition not specified
If drawings only mark "spacing" without stating center-to-center or clear spacing, the specification can easily be misunderstood during quotation and fabrication.
Ignoring on-site equipment and pipelines
If there are pipelines, equipment bases or other obstacles on site, the positions of holes, notches and special shapes should be confirmed before fabrication.
Comparing only unit price, not the full conditions
Even if grating panels have the same external dimensions, the bearing bars, grating spacing, surface type, fabrication content and hot-dip galvanizing requirements may differ. When comparing quotations, first confirm whether both quotes are for the same specification and fabrication scope before comparing actual prices.

Grating Selection FAQ
Q1. How thick does grating need to be?
This can't be answered with a single thickness. Grating specifications must be evaluated together with bearing bar height and thickness, support span, load direction, load type and installation method. If there are clear load requirements, we recommend providing complete service conditions and engineering drawings for confirmation.
Q2. Is pedestrian grating the same as roadway grating?
Their service conditions differ. Pedestrian and vehicle traffic involve different load types and requirements, and vehicle areas must also consider vehicle type, maximum gross weight, wheel loads, traffic pattern and support span. General pedestrian grating specifications therefore cannot be applied directly to vehicle areas.
Q3. How do you choose drain cover grating?
We recommend first confirming the clear width of the ditch, frame dimensions, support span, grating length and width and bearing bar direction, then whether pedestrians or vehicles will pass over it. If there is an existing frame on site, the usable depth and actual support positions also need to be confirmed.
Q4. Is smaller grating spacing always better?
Not necessarily. Grating spacing should be chosen to suit drainage, ventilation, walking, the service environment and project requirements. Smaller and larger spacings each have different material configurations and characteristics, so spacing should be confirmed according to actual needs rather than simply aiming for the smallest.
Q5. How do you choose between plain and serrated grating?
For general environments, the plain type can be chosen as needed; if more grip between shoe soles and the bearing bar surface is desired, the serrated type can be evaluated. However, serrated grating still requires on-site cleaning and maintenance and cannot replace environmental management of oil, mud and standing water.
Q6. Must outdoor grating be hot-dip galvanized?
The surface treatment method should be confirmed according to the material, service environment and project requirements. For carbon steel grating, hot-dip galvanizing is one of the common corrosion protection treatments and forms a protective coating on the steel surface. If the project specifies a surface treatment or corrosion protection standard, the specified requirements should be followed.
Q7. Can grating have holes made for pipelines?
Yes. Holes, notches or special-shape cutting can be fabricated according to engineering drawings and actual requirements. If there are equipment, pipelines or other obstacles on site, we recommend providing complete dimensions and positions before fabrication to help confirm the fabrication method.
Q8. If I have no idea about grating specifications, can the supplier help me choose?
You can start by providing the currently known information, such as intended use, dimensions, support span, load requirements, site photos and engineering drawings. K.C.F. and Shou Hsiang can help further confirm grating specifications and fabrication requirements based on actual service conditions.
There is no best specification,
only a more suitable one.
Choosing grating is not simply a comparison of thickness, size or price, but starting from the actual use to find a product configuration that meets the load, span, drainage, installation and maintenance conditions.
Starting with the intended use, load requirements and support span, then confirming bearing bars, grating spacing, plain or serrated type, hot-dip galvanizing and accessory fabrication, ensures the finished grating truly meets on-site requirements.
