GALVANIZING STANDARDS

Hot-Dip Galvanizing Standards

Clear standards to examine every layer of protection quality. From coating thickness and coating mass to appearance, coverage and adhesion, choose the applicable hot-dip galvanizing standard based on product and project requirements.

STANDARD & QUALITY

Why Is Hot-Dip Galvanizing
Why are clear standards needed?

Quality requirements for Hot-Dip Galvanizing are influenced by the product type, steel thickness, workpiece form and project requirements, so not all galvanized products can be judged by a single criterion.

For actual processing and acceptance, the applicable hot-dip galvanizing standards such as CNS, ASTM and ISO should be selected according to the product's use, and coating thickness, coating mass, appearance, coverage and other quality requirements confirmed according to the specified standard.

If engineering drawings, orders or contracts contain special requirements, the specified standard and version should be confirmed before processing, so that manufacturing conditions, inspection methods and final acceptance criteria share a consistent basis.

COMMON STANDARDS

Common Hot-Dip Galvanizing Standards

Different types of steel products may be subject to different standards. Below are the CNS, ASTM and ISO standards commonly used in hot-dip galvanizing and quality inspection; in actual use, the version specified for the project and the contract requirements take precedence.

CNS · NATIONAL STANDARDS
STANDARD CNS 10007
Hot-Dip Galvanized Coatings on Iron and Steel

Serves as the basis for hot-dip galvanizing quality requirements for steel products; actual requirements should be confirmed according to the applicable product category and specified standard version.

STANDARD CNS 8503
Hot-Dip Galvanizing Practice

Provides guidance on hot-dip galvanizing operations and serves as an important reference for galvanizing processes and practices.

STANDARD CNS 1247
Test Methods for Hot-Dip Galvanized Coatings

Serves as the basis for testing and quality inspection methods for hot-dip galvanized coatings.

INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS
ASTM A123/A123M
General Steel Products & Fabricated Components

A hot-dip galvanizing standard for general steel products and fabricated components, serving as the basis for coating quality requirements and acceptance.

ASTM A153/A153M
Iron & Steel Hardware

A hot-dip galvanizing standard for iron and steel hardware. The actual scope and quality requirements should be confirmed according to the specified version.

ISO ISO 1461
Hot-Dip Galvanized Coatings on Fabricated Steel Articles

Covers requirements and test methods for hot-dip galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles.

Note on using standards: Different standards vary in their applicable products, classification methods and inspection requirements. Before processing, confirm the standard number, version, engineering drawings and contract requirements specified for the project, rather than determining acceptance criteria for all workpieces based on the standard name alone.

QUALITY INSPECTION

Key Points of Hot-Dip Galvanizing Quality Inspection

Galvanizing quality cannot be judged only by how bright the surface is. Actual acceptance should refer back to the applicable standards and contract requirements, confirming coating thickness, coating mass, appearance and coverage, adhesion, and any necessary repair and acceptance requirements based on workpiece conditions.

01

Coating Thickness & Coating Mass

Confirm the hot-dip galvanized coating thickness or zinc coating mass per unit area according to product category, steel thickness and applicable standard. Requirements may differ for different types and thicknesses of steel workpieces, so the applicable standards, contract and engineering drawings take precedence.

02

Appearance & Coverage

Check that the coating completely covers the workpiece surface and confirm whether there are bare spots, zinc lumps, sharp protrusions or other conditions that would affect subsequent use.

Does a brighter coating mean better quality?

Not necessarily. The brightness, color and appearance of a hot-dip galvanized surface may be affected by steel composition, workpiece condition and process conditions. Surface brightness alone therefore cannot be the sole criterion for galvanizing quality.

03

Coating Adhesion

Confirm the bond between the coating and the steel substrate according to the applicable hot-dip galvanizing standard, and check for any flaking that does not meet requirements. Actual inspection methods and acceptance criteria should follow the specified standard.

04

Repair & Acceptance

If a hot-dip galvanized workpiece requires local repair, the permitted repair area, treatment method and final acceptance requirements should be confirmed according to the applicable standard to maintain the integrity of the coating's protection.

QUALITY ≠ APPEARANCE ONLY

Galvanizing quality
can't be judged by appearance alone.

After hot-dip galvanizing, the workpiece surface may show varying degrees of brightness, gray tones or surface texture depending on steel composition, surface condition, workpiece structure and process conditions.

Therefore, when judging hot-dip galvanizing quality, the coating thickness, coverage, adhesion and related inspection conditions required by the specified standard should form the basis of judgment, rather than surface brightness alone.

BEFORE GALVANIZING

Before ordering and sending for galvanizing,
we recommend confirming this information

Complete workpiece information helps confirm the applicable galvanizing conditions and quality requirements before processing. If the project has special inspection or acceptance requirements, please also raise them before sending work for galvanizing.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Special acceptance requirements?
Please raise them before processing

If the project hasspecial coating thickness requirements, inspection report needs or third-party testing requirements, we recommend raising them before hot-dip galvanizing, so that process arrangements, inspection methods and final acceptance criteria can be confirmed in advance, reducing discrepancies caused by different understandings of the standards after processing.

!
Actual acceptance criteria follow the project specifications

The hot-dip galvanizing standards, inspection items and acceptance values actually adopted shall be based on the order, contract drawings and specified standard version confirmed by both parties. If the project documents contain explicit requirements, the project agreement takes priority.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hot-Dip Galvanizing Standards FAQ

Q1. What are the common hot-dip galvanizing standards?

Common standards include CNS 10007, CNS 8503, CNS 1247, as well as ASTM A123/A123M, ASTM A153/A153M and ISO 1461. Different standards apply to different products and have different requirements; which standard to use should be confirmed according to the workpiece type, engineering drawings and contract requirements.

Q2. Is there a fixed standard for hot-dip galvanized coating thickness?

Not necessarily. Coating thickness requirements vary with product category, steel thickness, applicable standard and project requirements. A single thickness value therefore cannot be applied to all steel workpieces; actual requirements are based on the specified standard version, contract and engineering drawings.

Q3. Can CNS, ASTM and ISO galvanizing standards be used interchangeably?

They should not be treated as identical. CNS, ASTM and ISO standards may differ in scope, product classification, inspection methods and requirements. If a project or customer has specified a particular standard, processing and quality confirmation should follow that standard and version.

Q4. If a hot-dip galvanized surface isn't bright, does that mean poor quality?

Not necessarily. The brightness and color of the surface after hot-dip galvanizing may be affected by steel composition, workpiece surface condition and process conditions. Brightness alone cannot be used to judge quality; coating thickness, coverage, adhesion and other requirements must also be confirmed according to the applicable standard.

Q5. Can zinc lumps or protrusions on a galvanized surface be dressed?

After hot-dip galvanizing, zinc lumps and sharp protrusions that may affect handling, assembly or use can be appropriately dressed according to workpiece requirements. If coating repair is involved, the repair area, treatment method and acceptance requirements should be further confirmed according to the applicable standard.

Q6. What information should be provided before galvanizing?

We recommend providing the product use, steel material, workpiece dimensions, steel thickness, and the hot-dip galvanizing standard and version specified for the project. The more complete the information, the easier it is to confirm process and acceptance conditions before processing.

Q7. When should special coating thickness or third-party testing requirements be raised?

If there are special requirements for coating thickness, inspection reports or third-party testing, we recommend raising them before processing begins, so that both parties can confirm the applicable standards, inspection methods and acceptance criteria in advance and avoid discovering different project requirements after processing is complete.

STANDARD FIRST

Confirm the standard first,
then confirm the quality.

Hot-dip galvanizing quality should not be judged on a single appearance or a single value. Different steel products, material thicknesses and project conditions may correspond to different standards and quality requirements.

From confirming the applicable standard before processing to inspecting coating thickness, coverage, adhesion and related quality items afterward, hot-dip galvanizing processing and acceptance can have a clear and consistent basis.
