Starting with materials and structure
to build solid grating
Steel grating is mainly made ofbearing bars and cross bars, regularly arranged and joined to form a steel structure with open grating holes.
Grating is widely used in drain covers, industrial platforms, pedestrian walkways and other engineering facilities. Different service environments have different requirements for size, load capacity, grating spacing and surface protection, so actual service conditions must be confirmed before manufacturing.
From specification confirmation, steel preparation, arrangement and welding to cutting, holes, accessory fabrication and hot-dip galvanizing, every process affects the installation, use and subsequent maintenance of the grating.
Balancing drainage, load bearing and on-site installation requirements.
Grating structure planned according to span, load and equipment layout.
Considering walking needs, grating spacing and safety in use.
Custom special shapes, holes and accessories fabricated according to drawings.
Steel Grating Manufacturing Process
Grating is not finished just by welding steel together. From load direction, span and load to subsequent cutting, holes and surface corrosion protection, everything must be planned according to actual drawings and usage requirements.
Specification Confirmation
Based on the drawings provided by the customer or on-site usage requirements, the finished grating dimensions, bearing bar specifications, cross bar spacing and support method are confirmed.
Load direction, span and actual service load are all important bases for planning the structure and specifications of steel grating.
Material Preparation
Bearing bars and cross bars are prepared according to the confirmed product specifications, and material dimensions and surface condition are checked.
Depending on usage requirements, plain or serrated bearing bars can be selected for subsequent fabrication to suit actual project conditions.
Arrangement & Positioning
Bearing bars are arranged at the specified spacing, then cross bars are placed and positioned using jigs to keep the grating spacing and alignment neat, ready for welding.
Welding
Depending on product design and equipment conditions, pressure welding or another suitable welding method is used to join the bearing bars and cross bars, forming a solid and complete grating structure.
Cutting & Holes
Grating is cut to finished size, and notches, holes or other special shapes are fabricated according to engineering drawings to suit on-site pipelines, equipment and actual installation positions.
Banding & Accessory Fabrication
Edge bars are welded to finish the grating perimeter, and hinges, clips, handles or other accessories can be added as needed for on-site installation and future maintenance.
Surface Corrosion Protection
After welding and fabrication, the grating undergoes hot-dip galvanizing or a specified surface treatment.
Hot-dip galvanizing carbon steel grating forms a protective coating on the steel surface, improving the grating's corrosion resistance and extending its durability in the actual service environment.
Quality Inspection & Shipping
After fabrication and surface treatment, finished dimensions, grating spacing, welds and surface treatment quality are inspected, and the finished product is checked against the order and engineering drawings.
After quality confirmation, packaging and shipping are arranged. If the project requires load testing or third-party inspection, we recommend raising this before ordering and fabrication of the grating.
From a single steel bar to a complete grating panel
Grating manufacturing is a series of interlinked fabrication steps. Early specification confirmation affects material and structural configuration, mid-stage fabrication determines finished size and installation conditions, and the product is finally completed through surface corrosion protection and quality confirmation.
Choose the grating type based on usage needs
Different locations may have different requirements for grating surface type, fabrication method and installation accessories, so these should be confirmed against site conditions and engineering drawings.
Plain Bearing Bars
Made with standard plain bearing bars, the grating can be planned according to size, spacing, span and actual project requirements.
Serrated Bearing Bars
Serrated bearing bars are selected according to the service environment and requirements, and the product is fabricated to suit project conditions and actual usage.
Once the grating is fabricated,
corrosion protection truly begins.
For carbon steel grating, after cutting, holes, banding and accessory welding are completed, it can undergo Hot-Dip Galvanizing.
Through surface pre-treatment and the hot-dip galvanizing process, a protective coating forms on the steel surface, improving the grating's protection against environmental corrosion. The actual surface treatment should still be confirmed according to material, engineering specifications and project requirements.
Before ordering grating,
we recommend confirming this information
complete project information helps confirm grating dimensions, material configuration and fabrication methods. If engineering drawings are available, please provide them at the inquiry and ordering stage.
Need load testing or
third-party inspection?
If the project requires load testing, inspection documents or third-party inspection, we recommendraising this before ordering and fabricating the grating, so that product specifications, fabrication methods, test items and acceptance criteria can be confirmed in advance, avoiding the discovery of different project requirements after the product is completed.
Once grating is finished,
what are the main inspection items?
Finished product inspection is not just about checking appearance; it also means referring back to the order and engineering drawings to verify that dimensions, grating configuration, fabrication and surface treatment meet requirements.
Confirm finished dimensions against the order and drawing requirements.
Confirm the arrangement of bearing bars and cross bars.
Inspect the grating structure and related fabrication locations.
Confirm the quality of hot-dip galvanizing or the specified surface treatment.
Steel Grating Manufacturing & Custom Order FAQ
Q1. What materials is steel grating made of?
Steel grating is mainly made of bearing bars and cross bars. The bearing bars are arranged in a fixed direction and spacing, and a complete grating structure is formed with cross bars by welding and other methods. Actual material specifications and configuration must be confirmed according to product use and project requirements.
Q2. If grating panels are the same size, is their load capacity the same?
Not necessarily. Besides external dimensions, grating load conditions depend on bearing bar specifications, spacing, span, support method, load direction and actual load. Actual project service conditions should therefore be confirmed before ordering.
Q3. Can grating have holes made to suit on-site pipeline positions?
Yes. Notches, holes or special shapes can be fabricated according to drawings to suit on-site pipelines, equipment and installation positions. We recommend providing complete dimensions and relevant engineering drawings before manufacturing to confirm fabrication positions and methods.
Q4. What is the difference between plain grating and serrated grating?
One of the main differences is the surface form of the bearing bars. The plain type uses standard plain bearing bars, while the serrated type uses bearing bars with a serrated surface. Which type to choose should be confirmed according to the service environment and project requirements.
Q5. Why is carbon steel grating hot-dip galvanized?
After fabrication, carbon steel grating can be hot-dip galvanized according to the service environment and project requirements. Hot-dip galvanizing forms a protective coating on the steel surface, improving the grating's corrosion resistance and helping extend its service life in the actual environment.
Q6. Can hinges, handles or clips be added to grating?
Accessories including hinges, clips, handles and other related fittings can be fabricated according to actual product and project requirements. We recommend providing the installation method and accessory requirements at the ordering stage so they can be planned together with the grating fabrication.
Q7. Can load testing or third-party inspection requirements be raised after fabrication is complete?
We recommend not waiting until the product is finished. If the project specifies load testing, inspection documents or third-party inspection, please explain this before ordering so that product specifications, manufacturing methods, test items and acceptance criteria can be confirmed in advance.
Every process
is a solid foundation.
A grating panel starts with specification confirmation, then goes through steel preparation, arrangement and positioning, welding, cutting and holes, banding and accessory fabrication, before moving on to surface corrosion protection and quality confirmation.
Each fabrication step affects the others. Only by starting from the actual use, load conditions and installation requirements can the finished grating meet engineering and everyday needs.
