For a grating quote,
what information should you prepare?
Grating prices are not simply calculated by "length × width"; material specifications, load requirements, support span, fabrication methods, surface treatment and quantity can all affect the actual product configuration and quotation.
To help select suitable steel grating and speed up quotation and specification confirmation, we recommend providing as much information as possible on use, dimensions, load conditions, grating specifications and related project details when requesting a quote.
If you don't yet have complete specifications, you don't need to decide every detail yourself first. You can provideengineering drawings, site photos, basic dimensions or usage requirements, and K.C.F. and Shou Hsiang will help confirm the rest.
Prepare these 3 things first
7 Essential Pieces of Information for a Grating Quote
The more complete the information, the faster grating specifications and fabrication conditions can be confirmed. If some details are not yet decided, you can start the discussion with the information currently known.
Intended Use & Load Requirements
Please explain where the grating will be used, such as pedestrian walkways, drain covers, industrial platforms, equipment platforms or vehicle traffic areas.
If vehicles will pass over it, we recommend providing the vehicle type, maximum gross weight and any known wheel load requirements as a basis for evaluating grating specifications and load conditions.
Dimensions & Support Conditions
Please provide the length, width and required quantity of each grating panel, as well as the clear width of the ditch or the actual support span.
We also recommend marking the bearing bar direction. If there is an existing frame on site, please provide the frame dimensions and usable depth so we can confirm how the grating fits the site structure.
Grating Specifications
If the project has already specified the grating, please provide the bearing bar height and thickness, bearing bar spacing, cross bar specification and cross bar spacing.
Please also indicate plain or serrated type. If spacing dimensions are provided, we recommend clearly marking them ascenter-to-center or clear spacing to avoid different understandings of the specification.
Material & Surface Treatment
Please indicate the specified grating material and surface treatment requirements, for example carbon steel grating with Hot-Dip Galvanizing.
If the project specifies galvanizing standards, coating thickness or other corrosion protection requirements, please also provide them at the inquiry stage.
Frames & Accessories
Please indicate whether frames, hinges, handles, fasteners or other installation accessories are needed.
If there are pipelines, equipment or other obstacles on site, please also indicate whether holes, notches, special-shape cutting or other custom fabrication is required.
Quantity, Delivery Date & Delivery Location
Please provide the required quantity for each grating size, the expected delivery date and the actual delivery address.
If the project requires batch deliveries, or the site has special unloading, access or transport conditions, we also recommend explaining this at the inquiry stage to help evaluate production and delivery arrangements. Why is the support span needed for a grating quote?
The support span is one of the key pieces of information for evaluating grating specifications and load conditions. Even if grating panels have the same external dimensions, different support spans, load directions and load conditions may require different bearing bar specifications. We therefore recommend providing the actual clear width of the ditch or the support span.
Q3. What dimensions are needed for a drain cover grating quote?
We recommend providing the length, width and quantity of each grating panel, as well as the clear width of the ditch, actual support span and bearing bar direction. If there is an existing frame on site, please also provide the frame's internal dimensions and usable depth so we can confirm whether the grating will fit the existing structure correctly.
Q4. What load information is needed for areas with vehicle traffic?
If the grating will be used in a vehicle traffic area, we recommend stating the type of vehicles, maximum gross weight and any known wheel load requirements, along with the actual support span and installation conditions. This information serves as the basis for subsequent evaluation of grating specifications and load conditions.
Q5. Can grating have custom holes or notches made to site dimensions?
Holes, notches or special-shape cutting can be fabricated according to actual product and engineering drawing requirements. If there are pipelines, equipment or other locations to avoid on site, we recommend providing fully dimensioned drawings when requesting a quote, marking the positions and orientation of holes and notches.
Q6. Is it necessary to specify a hot-dip galvanizing standard for a galvanized grating quote?
If the engineering specifications, contract or owner have already specified a hot-dip galvanizing standard, coating thickness or other corrosion protection requirements, we recommend providing them directly at the inquiry stage. If there is currently no special specification, you can first describe the actual service environment and surface treatment requirements for further confirmation.
Q7. Is grating priced by area?
Grating quotations are not affected by finished area alone. Bearing bar specifications, grating spacing, quantity, holes and special-shape fabrication, accessories, surface treatment, inspection requirements and transport conditions can all affect the actual quote. Evaluation must therefore still be based on complete specifications and project requirements.
Q8. Can I request a quote with only site photos and no engineering drawings?
Yes. You can first provide site photos along with the currently known basic dimensions and usage requirements as a reference for preliminary specification confirmation. If formal fabrication follows, complete dimensions, support conditions, fabrication positions and other necessary specifications will still need to be confirmed.
Q9. When should third-party inspection or load testing requirements be raised?
We recommend raising them before the quote and formal fabrication. If material certificates, galvanizing inspection reports, load testing or third-party inspection are needed, confirming this early helps incorporate the related inspection items, documentation requirements and acceptance criteria into the quotation and fabrication plan.
Specifications not yet decided?
Get your requirements organized first.
You don't need to know the complete bearing bar specifications, grating spacing or every fabrication detail before requesting a quote. If you currently only have usage requirements and site conditions, you can start by organizing the information you have.
Providingdrawings, site photos, basic dimensions, intended use and load requirements makes subsequent specification confirmation and quotation discussions more efficient, and reduces the need for re-confirmation during fabrication due to information gaps.
How to prepare your quote information
Even without formal engineering drawings, you can first organize the information currently known according to the following items.
